We all look forward to that one day a year when family and friends convene around in song to watch you blow out the candles on your birthday cake with birthday greetings. But before you get with it have you ever wondered why we do that action?
History of candles in the birthday
One theory is that the history of putting candles on cake began in Ancient Greece. The Greeks would make round cakes to honor Artemis, the goddess of the moon. The lit candles on the cake imitated the glow of the moon, and the smoke from the candles carried their prayers and wishes to the Gods who lived in the skies. Others probably supposed the smoke helped to ward off evil spirits. Some scholars believe the tradition actually started in Germany, where a candle was supposedly placed on the cake to symbolize “the light of life”.
Generate the best things ever with candles
Today, we still put birthday candles on cakes and hope to intromit great birthday greetings in this day. Many people still hold in superstitious beliefs about them, too. For example, many people believe that the birthday boy or girl must make a silent wish before blowing out the candles. If all the candles are blown out in one moment, the wish will come true, and the person will have good luck throughout the year. Besides, if it gets more than one breath to blow out all the candles or if the person tells someone what the wish was, it will supposedly not come true.
